This book is about the life of Celie growing up in the deep American south in the early 1900s in the midst of segregation and poverty. Later, she meets up with Shug a lesbian blues singer who supports her and they have a relationship. She also gains support from other female companions. Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for the novel published in l982. She was the first black woman to win this prize. The book was also turned into a film – well worth watching.
